January 2014 Newsletter

6th January 2014

Dear Parents,

Welcome back from the Christmas Break. We hope you all had a good Christmas and wish you a Happy New Year.

Below is a list of topics that will be keeping us busy this half term. If you have any toys or books etc related to a theme, then please bring them in for us all to see and discuss. Finally, if you have any problems or queries concerning your child and/or playgroup, then feel free to speak to a member of staff during the morning session, or alternatively ring me at any time (within reason) on 07521820232.

January 6th – 10th  ‘What we did for Xmas’. During the first week back, we will be discussing what we all did over the Christmas holidays. It will give us a chance to use some of those left over cards & wrapping paper that we all have, with lots of cutting & gluing opportunities.

January 13th – 17th  –  This week we will be starting on a ‘Winter’ theme. There will be ice to explore & observe, ‘bird feeders’ to be made & the children will also have the opportunity to play with white ‘Flubber’. Snowmen and Penguin masks will also be made.

January 20th – 24th   – The winter theme continues. This week the children will be attempting to make ‘mitten sun catchers’, paint & decorate ‘glitter stars’ and preparing & eating a winter vegetable soup. We also hope to make a ‘kitchen roll’ penguin, so any empty roll holders would be gratefully received!

January 27th – 31st  –  Chinese New Year – The Year of the Horse falls on Friday of this week. The children will be celebrating the Chinese New Year by making lanterns, painting a rabbit, collaging fish & decorate dragons. We will also be tasting noodles & making a role play Chinese Take-Away.

January 3rd – 7th   –   During this week we will be looking at ‘Cold – Ice & Snow’. A week with lots more ice – the children will have ice cubes to melt (but this time flavoured, so they taste better) and ‘Ice Balloons’ to be experimented with, using food colouring, salt & a trough of warm water. We will also be collaging robins during this week, and playing with ‘Winter Shaving Foam!’

February 10th – 14th –  More winter activities to be enjoyed! This week we will be making ‘winter’ hand print trees, cutting and sticking a paper plate snowman and cutting and sticking a Walrus. The children will also have the opportunity to play with ‘Snow Dough’ and make ‘Valentine’s Day Cards.

February 17th – 21st  – The last week of this half term – more ‘Winter Activities’. This week activities will include cutting and sticking penguins, painting ‘5 Little Snowmen’ and ‘foot print snowmen’, and later in the week we will also be making Rock Cakes.
